Generally, three types of Special Issues are published in Atmospheric Environment. These are (1) Single Topic Special Issue, (2) Field Campaign Special Issue, and (3) Conference Special Issue. Typically, a single Special Issue will contain 10-20 full-length papers. Fewer manuscripts are often published as a "Special Section." Any proposal for a Special Issue (or a Special Section) must provide justification in terms of answers to questions listed below and be electronically submitted to the Special Issue Coordinator Wendy Ye (W.Yee@elsevier.com). Your proposal will be evaluated by the Editors-in-Chief of Atmospheric Environment in the United States (Hanwant.B.Singh@nasa.gov), Germany (ali@tropos.de), and Hong Kong (keckchan@ust.hk) as well as the Publishing Editor at Elsevier Science (D.Hopwood@elsevier.com).

• Please provide a short general description of the aims and scope of the Special Issue with a list of authors and titles.
• Who are the guest editors/organizers and the sponsoring organizations?
• What are the reasons that this special topic warrants publication as a single issue of the journal?
• Can each paper stand alone as "making an original contribution?" Please indicate any papers that are of special importance.
• Have the authors already agreed to participate in the Special Issue?
• Please state the approximate number of manuscripts, typescript pages, and submission date of papers.
• Do you wish to order extra copies of the Special Issue for distribution to your members?

Once the Special Issue concept has been approved, a handling editor will be assigned who will work closely with the guest editors to agree on submission deadlines and the review process. It is incumbent on the guest editors/organizers and the authors to consult the "Guide for Authors"published in each issue of Atmospheric Environment. Nominally, papers are 20 double-spaced pages long (including text, figures and tables), but occasional exceptions can be made. Please note that all manuscripts are submitted via EES (http://ees.elsevier.com/atmenv/) by the corresponding authors. The EES will be configured for the Special Issue well before the agreed upon submission deadline. Guest editors make sure that the manuscripts meet basic quality and format requirements and are submitted on time. Along with the authors, they also suggest names of potential referees avoiding any conflicts of interest. The handling editor will make all accept/reject decisions.
